The General Golden Rule:

🔥 SER = Generality | ESTAR = Specific

When you talk about weather or food, use SER to speak about its nature (how it normally is). Use ESTAR to speak about how it feels or tastes at this exact moment.

1. Weather (SER vs ESTAR)

We use SER to define the typical climate of a place, and ESTAR for the current weather at this exact moment.

Oaxaca es caluroso. (General characteristic of the place)

Hoy está caluroso. (Today's condition)

Vigo es una ciudad lluviosa. (General characteristic)

Ahora está lloviendo. (Action in progress / current weather)

2. Food & Drinks

SER describes the flavor or inherent quality. ESTAR describes the perception when tasting it right now or its current condition.

El limón es ácido. (It is its nature)

La leche está agria. (Current state, it has spoiled)

El café es amargo. (Natural flavor)

La sopa está rica. (Impression upon tasting it today)
