The Golden Rule: Bien and Mal

The number one mistake is saying "Él es bien". Bien and Mal are adverbs and in this context ONLY used with the verb ESTAR. To describe the essence of someone, you must use the adjectives Bueno or Malo with SER.

SER + Bueno / Malo

Describes the essence, moral quality, ethics, or inherent ability.

1. People and Actions (Moral and Ethics)

Intrinsic qualities or morality of an action.

  • "María es buena porque siempre ayuda."
    (Moral essence)
  • "Mentir es malo."
    (Unethical action)

2. Physical or Abstract Things (Quality)

Describes the general quality of something.

  • "Este libro es bueno para aprender."
    (Good quality)
  • "El sistema de salud es malo."
    (Inherent bad quality)

3. Skills and Abilities

Rating how good someone is at an activity.

  • "Pedro es malo en matemáticas."
    (Lack of ability)
  • "Ana es muy buena jugando ajedrez."
    (Outstanding ability)

ESTAR + Bueno / Malo

Describes the temporary physical state, health, taste, or attractiveness.

1. People (Physical and Health)

Physical attractiveness (colloquial) or state of health (illness).

  • "Ella está bien buena con ese vestido."
    (Physically attractive)
  • "Carmen está mala; tiene fiebre."
    (Temporarily ill)

2. Things (Taste and Condition)

Good taste or temporary deterioration.

  • "La comida está buena, tiene sal perfecta."
    (Delicious taste)
  • "El queso está malo, huele mal."
    (Deteriorated / Spoiled)

CAUTION: Bien and Mal are adverbs. They never go with SER. Only with ESTAR.

Feelings and general state.

  • "¿Estás bien? Pareces preocupado."
    (Emotional state)

    (Temporary physical state)

2. Food and Drinks (Condition)

Suitable or unsuitable for consumption.

  • "El pescado está bien, lo compré hoy."
    (Suitable for eating)
  • "La leche está mal, huele raro."
    (Unsuitable for consumption)

3. Actions (Appropriateness)

Whether an action is correct or inappropriate in a situation.

  • "Está bien ayudar a los demás."
    (It's the correct thing to do)
  • "Está mal dejar las cosas para el último momento."
    (It's inappropriate)
